Description

Shadows of the Wind, also known as Treasures of China, is an unreleased action game for the Sega Mega Drive. It is not thought this game was officially announced for the Mega Drive, though development seemingly moved to the Amiga CD32, before being quietly cancelled around 1994.

A prototype build of the game was released by the Video Game History Foundation on December 15, 2025, as part of their Sega Channel archive release. It has only one playable level.

Shadows of the Wind

Overview & History

Released late in the 16-bit era in 1994 by an obscure indie developer working exclusively with Sega, Shadows of the Wind pushed the Genesis hardware to its absolute limit with lush, atmospheric parallax scrolling and a haunting FM synthesizer soundtrack. The storyline plunges players into a war-torn feudal Japan overrun by yokai demons, following Kaito, a disgraced samurai seeking redemption. Kaito must traverse five treacherous provinces, battling corrupt warlords possessed by otherworldly spirits to seal the ancestral Nethergate. Though it suffered from limited initial distribution, this dark fantasy platformer has since achieved legendary cult-classic status among retro collectors for its uncompromising difficulty and evocative, cinematic storytelling.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

The game blends frantic hack-and-slash action with precise platforming reminiscent of Shinobi III, but adds a unique "Wind Gauge" mechanic. As Kaito defeats enemies, his katana absorbs their restless energy, allowing him to unleash devastating screen-clearing tempest strikes or execute mid-air dashes to cross bottomless chasms. Players command a diverse repertoire of character moves, including a downward plunging katana smash, a quick-draw counter-attack, and a shuriken ranged assault. Boss encounters require memorizing complex attack patterns and exploiting split-second openings, keeping the gameplay intensely rewarding and strategic.
