Description

The story follows Johnny and Tom, two treasure hunters who have found an ancient treasure map. Before they can search for the treasure, however, their home is ransacked by the Mad Doctor, who steals the map and kidnaps their friend Mary. The two now must travel the world to defeat the Mad Doctor, rescue Mary and retrieve the map.

Along the way you uncover treasure chests that can contain special weapons like boxing gloves, bombs or ice shots. Each weapon has its own distinct range, firing trajectory and damage potential. Some weapons can cause opponents to bounce across the screen, doing damage to any other enemies in their path. You can charge up your weapons to do more damage or to have a wider spread pattern, depending on the weapon you’re currently equipped with. You also have a limited stock of bombs that can clear the screen of enemies when used.

Released by Data East in 1993 for the SNK Neo Geo AES and MVS arcade hardware, *Spin Master* (known as *Miracle Adventure* in Japan) is a vibrant, fast-paced run-and-gun platformer that stands out in a library dominated by gritty fighting games. The storyline follows treasure hunters Johnny and Tom, whose peaceful expedition is abruptly interrupted when the villainous Dr. Dezoo kidnaps Johnny's girlfriend and steals half of a legendary treasure map. Joined by their trusty monkey companion, the duo embarks on a whimsical, globe-trotting quest across prehistoric jungles, ancient pyramids, and pirate-infested seas to retrieve the map, rescue the girl, and thwart Dr. Dezoo's world-domination schemes. While it didn't achieve the massive cult status of *Metal Slug*, it remains a beloved, colorful hidden gem of the Neo Geo library.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Unlike traditional shooters featuring firearms, *Spin Master* equips its heroes with unique melee and projectile tools—predominantly a yo-yo, but also extendable boomerangs, shuriken, and spiked maces. Players collect elemental power-ups (fire, ice, electricity) that drastically alter their primary attacks, adding devastating area-of-effect elemental damage to screen-clearing bomb spells. The game features distinct horizontal and vertical scrolling stages, requiring precise platforming alongside chaotic enemy eradication. Boss battles are a highlight, featuring multi-phase transformations that demand quick reflexes. The hand-drawn sprite work, bouncy chiptune soundtrack, and over-the-top animations deliver a distinctly playful aesthetic that separates it from its contemporaries.
