Description

Tetris X, released for PlayStation in Japan, is notable for being the first game officially released for a non-Nintendo console, after the Tetris rights reverted to Alexey Pajitnov in 1996. The Tetris Company had been set up and had signed an agreement with Sony, giving a three year licensing right for the release of Tetris on the PlayStation in both Japan and the US. The game features a “Classic” single player mode, and a competitive “Battle” mode that allows up to 4 players to compete against each other.

Tetris X

Released in Japan in 1996 by Bullet-Proof Software, Tetris X brought a vibrant, 32-bit facelift to the legendary arcade puzzle franchise. Designed to showcase the capabilities of early CD-ROM hardware, the game departs from the sterile grids of the past by introducing whimsical, pre-rendered 3D mascot characters who react dynamically to the player's performance. While the game lacks a traditional story mode, it features a lighthearted competitive lore where players choose from bizarre mascot avatars—including a robotic security eye, a dancing girl, and a strange gelatinous yellow creature—to represent them in intense, screen-clearing battles. This aesthetic shift bridged classical 2D sprite mechanics with the polygon-obsessed style of the mid-90s, backed by a high-energy, CD-quality electronic soundtrack.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

At its core, Tetris X preserves the iconic tetromino-stacking gameplay but injects high-stakes multiplayer energy. Clearing multiple lines simultaneously sends "garbage lines" to your opponent's playfield, triggering flashy, character-specific attack animations. Unique to this edition is the chaotic 4-Player Battle Mode, alongside a "Giant Tetris" modifier where blocks spawn at four times their normal size, completely disrupting standard spatial strategies. Advanced mechanics such as wall-kicks and early iterations of the "T-Spin" allow skilled players to slide blocks into seemingly impossible gaps, while a rapidly escalating gravity curve tests reflexes in the high-speed survival mode. Additionally, players can test their endurance in "Time Attack" or dismantle pre-arranged block obstructions in the precise "Puzzle Mode."
