Description
Originally released in 1983 for personal computers MSX in Japan, Bomberman returns reinvented and improved in 1985 for American region, to the Nintendo Entertainment System console.
Bomberman is a robot engaged in the production of bombs. Like his fellow robots, he had been put to work in an underground compound at the center of the Earth. Bomberman found it to be an unbearably dreadful existence.
One day he learned that any robot escaping from the center of the Earth and able to make it to the surface will become human. Bomberman jumped at the opportunity. Alerted to Bomberman’s betrayal, large numbers of enemy characters were sent out in pursuit.
Bomberman can only rely on bombs of his own production for his defense. Once there, will he really become human?
Bomberman
Overview & History
Released by Hudson Soft for the Family Computer Disk System in 1985 and subsequently brought to the North American NES in 1987, Bomberman transformed a humble underground maze concept into an arcade-style masterpiece. The game's bizarre sci-fi premise casts the protagonist not as a human, but as an android worker trapped in an underground manufacturing complex. According to the original lore, if this mechanical laborer successfully blasts his way to the surface, he sheds his robotic shell to become a human being. This quirky narrative set the stage for one of gaming’s most enduring franchises, bridging the gap between puzzle logic and frantic action.
Gameplay Features & Mechanics
Players navigate a grid-based arena constructed from indestructible gray blocks and destructible soft bricks. Armed with an infinite supply of explosives, Bomberman must systematically clear pathways while eradicating hostile patrol bots known as Pontan and Ballom. The core mechanical loop relies on spatial awareness and timing: setting a bomb triggers a fatal three-second fuse, forcing players to calculate escape routes and trap enemies in the blast radius. Hidden beneath the crumbling bricks are coveted power-ups that fundamentally alter the gameplay flow. Collecting Fire Up extensions expands the explosion's reach, Bomb Up increases the concurrent payload capacity, and the elusive Speed Skates transform the protagonist into a blur of motion. Certain rare items, such as the Detonator, grant manual remote detonation, while the Pass through walls ability allows players to phase through solid barriers. If time runs out before the exit door is found, a swarm of invincible enemies floods the stage, sealing the android's doom.
