Description

The game’s protagonist is called “Rockford”. He must dig through caves collecting gems and diamonds and reach the exit within a time limit, while avoiding various types of dangerous creatures as well as obstacles like falling rocks and the constant danger of being crushed or trapped by an avalanche, or killed by an underground explosion.

Boulder Dash

Overview & History

Originally conceptualized on home computers by Peter Liepa and Chris Gray, Boulder Dash was ported to the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) by JVC Musical Industries in 1990. While the NES version maintained the core subterranean puzzle-solving of the original, it introduced vibrant graphical enhancements, a revised soundtrack, and a unique co-op mode. The storyline follows Rockford, a rugged adventurer who must descend into treacherous, jewel-filled caves to collect valuable diamonds. Unlike traditional platformers, Rockford lacks weapons or combat abilities, relying entirely on his wits, pickaxe, and environmental manipulation to survive the shifting subterranean hazards.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

The gameplay revolves around grid-based puzzle exploration divided across numerous cave systems known as "caves." Rockford must unearth dirt while avoiding tumbling boulders and deadly enemies like Fireflies and Butterflies. The primary objective is to collect a specific quota of diamonds before a strict countdown timer expires, which subsequently unlocks the exit portal to the next level. Mechanics heavily feature physics: pushing a boulder causes it to roll off ledges or other rocks, often crushing enemies or sealing paths if not calculated properly. The NES iteration also added a two-player cooperative mode, allowing Rockford and his female counterpart, Crystal, to tackle caves simultaneously, adding a layer of strategic coordination to avoid accidental cave-ins and shared diamond counts.

Keyboard Controls
