You’re cruising along with your baby, Bunny, in your Buggy, when from behind you hear this brain-boggling b-b-baroooooom! It’s Dark Jackal and his beastly band of Blacktop Bullies! They buzz by and when the smoke clears, the passenger seat’s bare. These dudes have kidnapped your baby, Bunny!
Only you and the Buggy can bring her back. But not without a bone-bouncing chase that makes the Indy 500 look like bumper cars. Over jam-packed city streets and treacherous curves on mountain cliffs, past Dark Jackal’s Bullies to catch his Buggy and Bunny. And the cops are bearing down on you from behind. Think you got what it takes to save Bunny?
Bump 'n' Jump
Overview & History
Originally released in arcades by Data East in 1982 under the name Burner, this vehicular vehicular combat title made its way to the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1988, published by Vic Tokai. Unlike standard racing games of the era, Bump 'n' Jump features no official protagonist or deep narrative lore; instead, players assume the role of an unnamed, high-performance red buggy driver tasked with an endless, adrenaline-fueled commute across hazardous, vertically-scrolling highways. The goal is simple yet frantic: survive the elements, ram rival vehicles off the asphalt, and leap over treacherous river gaps. Its arrival on the NES brought the distinct vertical-scroller arcade rush into living rooms, trading quarter-munching persistence for high-score survival over four distinct seasonal phases—Spring, Summer, Autumn, and Winter—that endlessly loop with increasing difficulty.
Gameplay Features & Mechanics
At its core, Bump 'n' Jump combines fast-paced driving with aggressive combat and platforming elements. The player controls a volatile red car that must navigate heavily congested traffic while dodging erratic civilian vehicles and aggressive adversary cars that actively attempt to nudge the player off the road or into obstacles. A defining mechanic is the "bump" feature, allowing the player to smash sideways into rival cars, sending them crashing into guardrails or blowing up against roadside barriers. When roads abruptly terminate, players must utilize the signature jump mechanic to sail safely across wide water canals and deep chasms, landing precisely on the continuing asphalt below. Throughout the journey, players can collect 'POW' icons to upgrade their vehicle's jump distance and speed. Running out of lives occurs when the car plunges into water, crashes too many times, or hits dead-end blockades, culminating in a satisfying yet brutally unforgiving arcade challenge.
