Description

The Goonies is based on a movie of the same name from 1985. A group of youngsters from a neighborhood called the “Goon Docks” are trying to find the lost treasure of One-Eyed Willie to prevent the foreclosure of their houses. Unfortunately, the treasure is buried under the hide-out of the infamous Fratelli gang, a family of ruthless criminals who are on the run from the law. You play as the asthmatic Mikey, who must find the treasure and save the other Goonies before time runs out.

The game consists of six levels. In each level, you must collect three keys to advance to the next area. These can be found by blowing open doors with bombs that are dropped by enemies. Also hidden behind doors are power-ups and other Goonies to rescue. Trying to stop you are enemies such as rats, skeletons, and even members of the Fratelli Gang. Bonus points can be gained by picking up diamonds and other valuables, rescuing the other Goonies, or by dispatching enemies with your slingshot or kicking them.

Unlike the sequel, the Famicom version was never released outside of Japan.

The Goonies

Overview & History

Released by Konami in 1986 for the Family Computer in Japan and later adapted for the Nintendo Entertainment System via the PlayChoice-10 arcade system and rare physical distribution, The Goonies is a quintessential 8-bit platform-puzzle adventure. Based on the iconic Richard Donner and Steven Spielberg film, the game tasks players with guiding Mikey through the subterranean labyrinth of One-Eyed Willy's pirate ship. Unlike typical licensed cash-grabs of its era, Konami crafted a genuinely challenging, atmospheric quest where the ultimate goal is rescuing imprisoned fellow Goonies (Data, Chunk, Mouth, Stef, Andy, and Brand) scattered across eight distinct trap-laden stages, eventually culminating in the escape aboard the Inferno.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Unlike standard side-scrollers, The Goonies operates on a screen-by-screen flip-screen format requiring players to solve spatial puzzles using rudimentary items found within cracked walls and locked doors. Mikey begins completely defenseless, relying on a swift front kick to dispatch aggressive rats, bats, and giant spiders. Progress hinges entirely on collecting essential tools: dynamite to blast through fractured masonry, a hyper-slingshot for ranged attacks, boomerangs, and fire-resistant suits necessary to navigate fiery caverns. Players must rescue a trapped Goonie in every second level using a key, which unlocks the final door to progress. Managing bomb blasts and avoiding self-inflicted explosive damage adds a layer of tactical tension, while hidden warp zones and secret musical notes add deep exploratory value.
