Description
Koko Adventure (코코 어드벤쳐) is a Famicom platform game developed by Open Corp. in 1993. It is one of the few games for the Famicom that was developed in South Korea. This game was better well-known as its unreleased, American version known as Buzz & Waldog.
The game stars two characters, Koko and Suzi, who shares the same abilities. You can either play as either one in single player or both in multiplayer. There’s 3 levels in each stage as well as a boss fight. There’s 5 stages overall and after that, you fight all the bosses again before confronting the final boss. There’s also question mark boxes around that you can break to get points, gems, a time increase, 1-ups or a power-up. The power-up can either grant you the ability to double jump and if you already have that, the ability to let you glide in the air.
Koko Adventure was later changed and was supposed to be released by Innovation Technology in 1993 but due to unknown reasons, it never was along with some of Open Corp.’s other games. In this version, Suzi is replaced with a male character known as Waldog and the title screen was changed. (although her name remains on the game over screen through cheating/hacking). That version also features infinite lives, which was likely intended for debugging and testing.
Koko Adventure
Overview & History
Released in the late 1980s during the golden era of the Nintendo Entertainment System by an obscure developer, Koko Adventure is a forgotten gem of the 8-bit platforming genre. Originally hitting Japanese shelves as a regional exclusive under a different title, it eventually found its way to Western markets in limited quantities, making pristine original cartridges a prized possession for retro collectors. The storyline follows Koko, a plucky, jungle-dwelling monkey whose peaceful canopy home is disrupted when the mischievous crystalline artifact, the Sunstone, is stolen by the nefarious Dr. Macaque. Koko must traverse five distinct, hazard-filled biomes—ranging from ancient vine-draped ruins to active volcanic calderas—to recover the artifact and restore the ecological balance of his island paradise.
Gameplay Features & Mechanics
Koko Adventure distinguishes itself from contemporary platformers through its heavy emphasis on momentum-based verticality and environmental interaction. Players navigate side-scrolling stages using a physics engine that rewards precise timing, particularly when swinging from giant lianas or bouncing off the gelatinous caps of jungle mushrooms. Koko’s primary offensive move is the "Coco-Spin," a dynamic aerial attack where he curls into a ball to deflect incoming projectiles and smash through cracked limestone blocks. Additionally, Koko can collect scattered golden bananas to charge a devastating screen-clearing sonic screech. Health is measured by a dynamic tail-meter; taking damage causes Koko to lose segments of his tail, reducing his melee range until he collects restorative fruit hidden within destructible totem poles. Secret areas are abundant, often requiring players to exploit hidden wall-jumps or bomb-chute pathways to unearth rare artifact shards.
