Description

Darklarza, the Dragon Master, has been terrorizing the kingdom for many years. The king has retreated into exile with his bravest knight, Geraden, to hold his fort. Darklarza stages an attack on the king’s exile fortress and manages to abduct the princess. It is up to Geraden to journey through the kingdom, rescue the princess, and put an end to Darklarza’s reign once and for all.

Castle of Dragon is a side-scrolling action adventure in which Geraden must hack and slash his way through the kingdom and destroy legions on Darklarza’s forces. Initially equipped with a sword and a shield, plus the armor on his back, Geraden can upgrade to more powerful offensive and defensive options, as well as obtain various powerful magic spells.

Castle of Dragon

Overview & History

Developed by Athena and published by SEKAICHO in Japan before being localized by Romihoso for the North American NES market in 1990, Castle of Dragon is a cult-classic, dark fantasy side-scrolling action-platformer. Drawing heavy inspiration from Capcom's Ghosts 'n Goblins and ancient sword-and-sorcery lore, the game drops players into the armored boots of a valiant knight tasked with rescuing a captive princess from the clutches of an evil sorcerer and his monstrous, dragon-guarded stronghold. While the original arcade version was known for its distinct visuals, the NES port completely reimagined the experience with chunky sprite work, grueling difficulty spikes, and atmospheric, brooding chiptune tracks that set a genuinely menacing tone.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Unlike standard hack-and-slash titles of its era, Castle of Dragon emphasizes deliberate, tactical pacing. Players traverse six treacherous stages filled with gargoyles, skeleton warriors, and towering mythical bosses. The protagonist wields a standard broadsword by default, but the true depth of combat lies in discovering hidden weapon power-ups—such as the piercing lance, the sweeping halberd, and heavy magical axes—each altering attack range and recovery frames. Defensive maneuvering is paramount; players must master a crouching shield-block technique to deflect incoming projectiles while carefully timing jumping attacks over bottomless pits and crumbling masonry.
