It uses the MMC3 and a 512 KiB PRG ROM and 8 KiB CHR RAM. Bad Apple!!

Overview & History

Originally a legendary shadow-art music video from the Touhou Project franchise, Bad Apple!! achieved mythical status as a benchmark for homebrew computing limits. Years after its viral internet fame, developer icculus and hardware enthusiasts achieved the ultimate tribute: an official-spec physical ROM port for the 1985 Nintendo Entertainment System (NES). Released as a technical tour de force, this 8-bit demake pushes the Ricoh 2C02 picture processing unit to its absolute breaking point, streaming crisp, full-motion monochrome video and synchronized chiptune audio straight from standard NES cartridge architecture without modern expansion chips.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Unlike traditional side-scrollers, the NES version of Bad Apple!! functions primarily as an interactive multimedia experience and rhythm-based action hybrid. Players control the iconic silhouette of Reimu Hakurei as she navigates dynamically shifting geometric environments that mirror the iconic vector animations of the original PV. The core gameplay loop revolves around precision dodging, matching the frantic pacing of the iconic audio track. Reimu utilizes a streamlined moveset: standard movement via the D-pad, a focused "Focus Mode" to slow her movement speed for threading needle-thin bullet-hell patterns, and a screen-clearing "Spell Card" bomb ability that briefly inverts the monochrome color palette to obliterate oncoming hazards.

Keyboard Controls

  • Arrow Keys / D-Pad: Move Reimu / Navigate Menus
  • Action Keys: Attack / Focus Mode (Hold) / Bomb (Z / X)
  • Enter: Start / Pause
