Donkey Kong Jr.

Overview & History

Released by Nintendo for the Famicom in 1983 and subsequently brought to the North American NES in 1986, Donkey Kong Jr. serves as the direct sequel to the iconic arcade megahit. However, this installment subverts the traditional dynamic by casting the player as the titular young ape tasked with rescuing his captured father, Donkey Kong, who is now imprisoned by a vengeful Mario. Designed by Shigeru Miyamoto, this platformer shifts away from simple hammer-smashing and introduces verticality, vine-climbing physics, and puzzle-like navigation that demands precision timing across four distinct stages—the Vine Stage, Spring Stage, Chain Stage, and Mario's Hideout.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Unlike his father or his future self, Donkey Kong Jr. does not jump particularly high, forcing players to master a unique locomotion system centered on vines, ropes, and chains. Junior can climb two vines simultaneously at double speed, or slide down a single vine rapidly to evade snapping jaws of enemy Snapjaws and Nitpicker birds. The game introduces fruit-dropping mechanics: kicking or releasing hanging fruit causes it to plummet down the screen, knocking out enemies or rewarding bonus points. Each screen tests spatial awareness and route optimization as Mario unleashes defense mechanisms from the top of the cage, culminating in the iconic climax where Junior drops his father to safety and sends Mario tumbling into the mud.
