Double Dragon III
Overview & History
Released by Acclaim in 1990 for the Nintendo Entertainment System, *Double Dragon III: The Sacred Stones* (known in Japan as *Double Dragon 3: The Rosetta Stone*) diverged significantly from its arcade predecessor. Developed by Technos Japan, the NES iteration was entirely restructured as an overhead-scrolling adventure featuring an intricate globe-trotting plot. The storyline kicks off when Marion is kidnapped once again, prompting Billy and Jimmy Lee to enlist the aid of their martial arts master, Ranzan, and a towering brawler named Chin. To rescue Marion, the Lee brothers must travel across the globe—from the USA and China to Japan and eventually Egypt—to collect three mystical "Sacred Stones." Unlike the arcade version's notorious coin-gobbling difficulty, the NES release introduced password systems, selectable team members with distinct weapons like nun-chucks and steel claws, and a unique shop system where players could spend points earned in battle to purchase extra lives, stamina upgrades, and permanent moves. Though it dropped the cooperative simultaneous two-player mode of earlier titles in favor of a tag-team swapping mechanic, its ambitious scope and puzzle-like level design made it a distinct cult classic of the 8-bit era.
Gameplay Features & Mechanics
The core gameplay of *Double Dragon III* blends traditional beat-'em-up action with platforming segments and character-swapping tactics. Players can switch freely between Billy, Jimmy, Ranzan, and Chin on the fly, each bringing unique physical attributes and weapon proficiencies to the battlefield. The combat engine expands the martial arts repertoire with flying kicks, back-breaker throws, wall jumps, and devastating combo finishers. Special secret techniques can also be unlocked by purchasing upgrades or progressing through specific stages. Boss encounters require careful spacing and exploitation of enemy recovery frames, while environmental hazards add an extra layer of peril to the classic side-scrolling brawl.
