Description

Power Soccer is a cartoony style soccer game. It features fictional teams in matches that are depicted with a vertical viewpoint of the field. As the action moves from the midfield to the nets, the screen transitions between each area: when close to the net on either side, it zooms in and angles the camera closer to the ground to make it easier to line up a goal-scoring shot.

Power Soccer

Overview & History

Released in 1990 by Pack-In-Video specifically for the Japanese Family Computer (Famicom), Power Soccer (known natively as *Power Soccer* or *파워 사ッカー*) is a deeply eccentric, arcade-style sports title that abandons FIFA-style simulation in favor of chaotic, side-scrolling martial arts football. Set in a dystopian near-future where traditional soccer federations collapsed, rival factions battle for supremacy on hazardous urban pitches littered with obstacles. Unlike standard sports adaptations of the 8-bit era, this game blends traditional association football rules with violent beat-em-up mechanics, allowing players to slide-tackle opponents into oblivion and unleash elemental special shots straight from a fighting game. Though it never received an official Western localization during its prime, it has since achieved cult status among retro collectors and ROM hackers for its bizarre premise, colorful sprite work, and frantic two-player versus mode that pushes the Famicom's hardware limits to render dynamic, multi-tiered pitches.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Power Soccer features a hybrid control loop that feels part Tecmo Bowl and part Double Dragon. Players select a national or factional team composed of five athletes, each possessing distinct stat spreads in speed, kicking power, and endurance. The camera operates on a horizontal side-scrolling plane that tracks the ball across uneven terrain, featuring interactive hazards like mud pits, electrical panels, and sliding walls. When in possession, players can execute standard passes, lobs, and low-trajectory knuckleballs. However, the true meat of the gameplay lies in the offensive and defensive combat: users can punch, kick, and body-slam opposing players to steal the ball. Successfully stringing together consecutive passes builds a "Power Gauge" that enables signature character moves—such as the flaming "Dragon Drive" or the gravity-defying "Teleport Volley"—which invariably send the goalkeeper flying into the back of the net.
