Description

An airborne puzzle invasion! It’s raining Goombas, Bloobers and Boo Buddies! You have to help Mario cope with the airborne invasion! As the critters fall, catch them on trays. Switch and shuffle to save the day! Stack two of a kind and they both disappear. Or, capture the whole bunch in-between egg shells. When the egg shells match, out hatches Yoshi and up goes your score! The action heats up as the characters fall faster and faster. If your piles get too high, the game is over. Choose your difficulty level and play for a high score or challenge a friend in a head-to-head hatch-off! If you like Dr. Mario, but you’re ready for a whole new kind of challenge, you’ll love this quick-shuffle action puzzle game!

Yoshi

Overview & History

Released by Nintendo in 1991 for the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) and Game Boy, *Yoshi* marked the green dinosaur's first starring role before his definitive platforming debut in *Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island*. Developed by Game Freak—the studio later renowned for *Pokémon*—this falling-block puzzle game was designed by Kenji Sugimori and Junichi Masuda. Rather than a traditional platformer, the game tasks players with managing a frantic, dual-screen pantry of descending Mario universe enemies. Mario himself appears on the top screen, serving eggs whenever Yoshi successfully clears blocks below. The game is celebrated for its quirky, fast-paced puzzle mechanics and an upbeat soundtrack composed by Hirokazu Tanaka, blending classic Nintendo motifs with frantic match-3 progression.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

The core gameplay revolves around a playfield where four types of classic enemies—Goombas, Boo Buddies, Piranha Plants, and Bloopers—fall from the top of the screen. Players must control Yoshi at the bottom, shifting columns left and right to catch and stack these creatures. When two identical enemies touch vertically, they vanish. However, the ultimate goal is to trap enemies between two halves of a cracked Yoshi egg. Catching a top eggshell half and letting bottom halves (or trapped enemies) stack underneath hatches a baby Yoshi, scoring massive bonus points. As stages progress, the speed increases, and players can choose between "A-Type" (endless score attack) and "B-Type" (clearing structured puzzles), with a two-player competitive mode adding intense versus action where dumping garbage blocks onto your opponent's screen decides the winner.

Keyboard Controls

  • Arrow Keys / D-Pad: Move Yoshi left and right across the bottom columns
  • Action Keys: Rotate or swap stacked items depending on the game mode
  • Enter: Start / Pause the game
