Faria: A World of Mystery & Danger!

Overview & History

Released by Ascii Corporation in Japan in 1989 and later localized for North American audiences by Infogrames in 1991, Faria: A World of Mystery & Danger! is an ambitious, lesser-known action-RPG for the Nintendo Entertainment System. The storyline drops players into the medieval shoes of the young warrior adventurer, King Malte (or Princess Faria depending on the translation lore), who must rescue the kidnapped Queen Princess Faria from the tyrannical clutches of the evil warlord/monster King Okutane. Across five distinct provinces, players must conquer sprawling labyrinths, collect powerful elemental jewels, and navigate treacherous dungeons. Unlike many top-down RPGs of its era, Faria uniquely blends an overhead world-exploration perspective with dynamic, side-scrolling action sequences when entering towns, castles, and caves.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Faria stands out through its dual-perspective gameplay loop. On the overworld map, movement is handled via a top-down grid where you hack-and-slash roaming enemies, converse with townsfolk in cryptic fortresses, and buy equipment using Gold. However, crossing certain thresholds instantly transitions the game into a side-scrolling platformer reminiscent of Zelda II: The Adventure of Link, where vertical jumping and precise sword strikes are mandatory for survival. Your character is equipped with a primary sword that can be upgraded in length and power, alongside an arsenal of ranged magical projectiles—such as fireballs and boomerangs—fueled by magic points. Leveling up increases your maximum health and magic capacity, while cryptic NPCs dole out essential progression hints, items, and keys necessary to unlock sealed dungeon gates. Puzzles, hidden doors, and brutal platforming traps punctuate every corner of this forgotten 8-bit gem.
