The Goonies II

Overview & History

Released by Konami in 1987 for the Nintendo Entertainment System, The Goonies II serves as a quirky, loose sequel to the beloved 1985 Richard Donner adventure film, completely bypassing the traditional movie plot to forge its own surreal treasure hunt. Rather than adapting a cinematic script, the game strands the heroic kids once again—this time, the Fratellis have kidnapped Annie the mermaid and all of Mikey's friends, scattering them across a sprawling, labyrinthine fortress in Sweden. Unlike the linear platforming of its MSX predecessor, this NES sequel brilliantly hybridizes side-scrolling platform action with first-person room exploration, creating a bizarre yet captivating structural blueprint years before Metroidvanias became an industry standard. Konami crafted an unforgettable atmospheric journey, punctuated by a looping, infectious chiptune rendition of Cyndi Lauper’s 'The Goonies 'R' Good Enough' that remains forever burned into the nostalgia circuits of retro gamers.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Players control Mikey from a side-scrolling perspective as he traverses treacherous caves, ice caverns, and booby-trapped castle hallways, armed initially only with a yo-yo. However, the true depth of The Goonies II lies in its portal doors. Entering certain doors shifts the game into a first-person perspective, where players must punch walls, collect items, and interrogate locked-up Goonies or helpful NPCs using hints like 'HIT ME.' Success requires managing a robust inventory system featuring a boomerang, slingshot, hammer, firebombs, protective helmets, and even a diving suit. Defeated enemies drop 'Me' items and jewels that act as currency to purchase crucial upgrades, while finding hidden items like the raincoat or passport is mandatory to unlock access to later zones and ultimately rescue Annie.
