Description

You need split-second timing and sharp-shooting accuracy to join the FBI. Have you got what it takes? Prove it! Use your Zapper light gun to shoot the gangsters in the FBI line-up, without hitting the innocent bystanders. Hit the gangsters and you’ll score enough points to move to the next location: Hogan’s Alley. Here’s where the going gets rough. The gangsters pop in and out of windows, doorways and shadows, and are visible for a shorter amount of time. Beat the gangsters this time around and you’ll move to the Trick Shoot round. How long can you keep the tin cans hopping in the air? Keep them up there long enough and you’ll score enough points to become a full-fledged Agent in this exciting Nintendo Light Gun game!

Hogan's Alley

Overview & History

Released by Nintendo in 1984 for the arcade and brought to the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1985 (1989 in Europe), Hogan's Alley stands as an iconic pillar of early light-gun technology. Developed by Gunpei Yokoi's Research & Development 1 team, the game eschews traditional narrative depth in favor of a gritty, urban police training simulation. Players step into the polished shoes of a rookie law enforcement officer navigating gritty alleys to hone their marksmanship against cardboard cutouts of notorious gangsters, bank robbers, and innocent bystanders. It remains historically significant as one of the earliest titles to utilize the NES Zapper light gun, cementing itself in retro gaming lore alongside Duck Hunt.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Hogan's Alley splits its intense shooting drills across three distinct modes: Game A, Game B, and Trick Shot. In Game A, players face a rotating series of cardboard silhouettes that pop up from behind brick walls and trash cans. The core mechanic relies on split-second visual recognition; you must instantly blast armed mobsters and trench-coat-wearing thugs while withholding fire from innocent civilians like policemen, women holding bags, and professors. Game B ups the ante by introducing moving targets on a conveyor system, forcing players to track horizontal momentum. The Trick Shot mode adds a whimsical carnival-esque flair, challenging players to bounce a tin can through the air using consecutive well-placed shots before it hits the ground. Every missed shot or friendly fire incident strips away one of your three precious lives, culminating in a dramatic Game Over screen if your accuracy falters.
