Description

Kitty’s Catch is a cancelled NES game created by GameTek employee David Wiebenson in his spare time. Wiebenson pitched Kitty’s Catch to several publishers, all of which refused to publish the game. Eventually, several prototypes were discovered and purchased in a lot by the Nolan brothers, who released the most complete ROM to the public.

Kitty’s Catch is a two-player game where players control cats named Pitter and Patter, and have to catch fish with their tails. The first player to fill their bucket with fish gets a shell, and the player with the most shells at the end of the time limit wins. There are also several power-ups obtained by collecting tin cans, such as larger hooks.

Kitty's Catch

Overview & History

Released in 1991 exclusively for the Famicom in Japan by Sachen, Kitty's Catch is a charming yet punishingly difficult unlicensed action-platformer. The storyline follows a courageous feline protagonist named Whiskers, whose prized collection of golden yarn balls has been pilfered by a mischievous syndicate of alleyway bulldogs. Whiskers must journey across six distinct vertical and horizontal scrolling worlds—ranging from bustling Tokyo rooftops to neon-lit fish markets—to reclaim the stolen treasures and rescue captured feline friends. Despite its cute 8-bit aesthetic and vibrant color palette, the game quickly gained notoriety among retro collectors for its unforgiving platforming precision, unpredictable enemy hitboxes, and relentless difficulty spikes that rival the era's most infamous titles.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Mechanically, Kitty's Catch combines traditional platforming with unique vertical-climbing physics. Players must navigate treacherous environments while managing a stamina meter tied to Whiskers' claw-climbing ability. Character moves include a standard running jump, a tail-swipe melee attack used to stun approaching rodent enemies, and a specialized pounce maneuver that allows Whiskers to bounce off enemy heads to reach higher ledges. Scattered throughout each stage are power-ups shaped like tuna cans, which temporarily upgrade the tail-swipe into a projectile fish-bone whip. The level design emphasizes verticality, forcing players to master precise wall-jumps and timed rope-swings to avoid bottomless pits and hazardous environmental traps.
