Nomolos: Storming the CATsle

Overview & History

Developed by Top Hat Fox and originally released as an authentic homebrew title for the 8-bit Nintendo Entertainment System, Nomolos: Storming the CATsle is a challenging, platforming action-adventure inspired by classic 80s dark-fantasy tropes. The narrative follows Nomolos, a brave little pig warrior on a perilous quest to rescue Princess Tina from the clutches of King Velamir and his treacherous feline empire. Blending tight retro aesthetics with unforgiving level design, the game pays homage to iconic titles like Castlevania and Ghosts 'n Goblins while carving out its own distinct identity through whimsical character designs and chiptune audio.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Nomolos features multi-tiered stages filled with crumbling masonry, rising lava, and hazardous traps. Players must navigate treacherous vertical and horizontal environments while battling waves of unique enemies, including goblin rats, armored dogs, and airborne gargoyles. As Nomolos, players wield a trusty short-sword for melee strikes, complemented by throwable sub-weapons and magic spells collected throughout the castle. Mastering the jump arc is critical, as misjudging platform edges often means plunging into bottomless pits or facing instant death spikes. Defeated bosses yield upgraded abilities and permanent stat boosts, allowing Nomolos to push deeper into the catacombs and throne rooms of the CATsle.
