Description

This game is based off the Contra series, and has a total of 5 areas with varying themes. The player starts with 4 lives as opposed to 3 (although the stat screen displays 5 lives at the start) and 6 continues instead of 3. The standard enemies are similar to those in the originals, but they speed up when they reach the middle of the screen and never shoot. The level designs are considerably more basic than those in Contra and are mostly original, although the first half of Area 4 bears a strong resemblance to Area 4 from Super C.

Released during the twilight era of the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) by unlicensed developers capitalizing on the massive popularity of Konami’s legendary run-and-gun franchise, Super Contra 7 is a bizarre and fascinating bootleg artifact. While Konami never officially released a numbered sequel beyond the original arcade and NES ports, Asian pirate developers took the franchise name and completely fabricated this wild 8-bit entry. Borrowing assets haphazardly from various Capcom and Konami titles, this unauthorized cartridge offers a surprisingly frantic challenge. The flimsy storyline drops freedom-fighters Bill Rizer and Lance Bean into an alternate alien jungle swarming with mechanized arachnids and mutant bio-horrors led by a rogue galactic federation. Though plagued by notorious sprite-flicker and Engrish text screens, it remains a legendary curiosity among retro collectors who appreciate the sheer audacity of pirate-era game design.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Unlike standard side-scrolling entries, Super Contra 7 alternates unpredictably between frantic horizontal run-and-gun stages and pseudo-3D behind-the-back tunnel segments reminiscent of the original arcade classic. Players collect classic weapon power-up spheres—denoted by floating letters—to upgrade their default pea-shooter into the iconic Spread Gun (S), Laser Beam (L), or Fireball launcher (F). Unlike official games, this pirate port introduces slightly floaty jump physics and unforgiving hitboxes, meaning players must master precision mid-air maneuvering to dodge relentless bullet hell patterns. Each of the grueling five stages culminates in a towering, multi-tiered boss fight requiring pattern memorization and twitch reflexes, pushed to the brink by an aggressive enemy spawn rate that relentlessly tests your remaining lives.
