Description

Jongbou is a combination of the popular Chinese board game Mahjong and a block-breaking game such as Breakout. Players bounce a ball around a Mahjong table filled with concealed tiles, with their goal being to dislodge the tiles and collect the ones they wish to add to their hand by passing underneath them as they fall. The stage is over either after all the tiles have fallen or the player has a winning hand.

Jongbou

Overview & History

Released exclusively in Japan during the late 1980s by a lesser-known developer, Jongbou is a fascinating, highly obscure Famicom hidden gem that blends traditional tile-matching strategies with fast-paced side-scrolling platforming. Originally conceived as an experimental tie-in to a popular arcademahjong property, the game diverges wildly into an imaginative fantasy quest. Players take on the role of Jongbou, a mythical tile-spirit tasked with restoring the fractured Celestial Pagoda. The storyline unfolds through charming, static 8-bit cutscenes between stages, detailing Jongbou's journey across five floating realms to defeat the corrupt Jade Emperor. Due to its niche genre hybrid and limited print run, original cartridges have become elusive collector's items in the retro gaming community.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Unlike standard action titles of the era, Jongbou requires players to master a dual-layered gameplay loop. Traversing each platforming stage requires precise jumping and obstacle avoidance, but progression is barred by magical gates. To open these, players must collect scattered dragon tiles and quickly solve micro-mahjong matching puzzles on a secondary HUD within a strict time limit. Character moves include a standard jade-rod melee strike, a mid-air floating spin, and the signature 'Tile Toss' projectile attack that consumes collected hand-tiles as ammunition. Boss encounters require both platforming dexterity and rapid tile-pattern recognition to break enemy shields, offering a surprisingly deep tactical challenge.
