THE MAZE CRAZY PUZZLE CHALLENGE THAT WILL AMAZE YOU!

Weave your way through the maze of passages which takes you within the ancient tombs and causeways of the Pharaohs. The seemingly innocent and sturdy-looking floor tiles can move, change, flip and reverse your direction at anytime, throwing you for a serious loop. And, throughout the tangled labyrinth of causeways, there are scarab beetles hiding in the tiles, trying to block your way. But if you can gain the power of the sun god, “Ra”, you just might have the skill and cunning to find your way to the Tomb of the Pharaoh, Scarabeus.

Pyramids of Ra

Overview & History

Released during the late twilight of the NES era, *Pyramids of Ra* is a fascinating puzzle-platformer developed by Nexa Corporation and published by Panasonic in North America in 1992. Obscured by heavier hitters of its generation, the game transports players into the claustrophobic, booby-trapped tombs of ancient Egypt. The storyline follows an unnamed intrepid archaeologist trapped within the cursed labyrinth of Pharaoh Ra. To escape alive, our hero must navigate shifting sandstone chambers, collect sacred ankhs, and outsmart mummies and skeletal guards before the ancient oxygen-deprived catacombs seal their fate forever. Its distinct atmospheric blend of Egyptian mythology and grid-based logic sets it apart from standard run-and-gun platformers of the 8-bit era.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Unlike traditional linear platformers, *Pyramids of Ra* plays out like a tactical action puzzle game. Players navigate single-screen, multi-tiered chambers viewed from a side-on perspective. The core gameplay loop revolves around manipulating the environment rather than mindless combat; you cannot directly defeat enemies with a weapon. Instead, players must push, pull, and drop heavy limestone blocks to crush pursuing mummies, block laser-firing statues, or carve out safe pathways to higher ledges. The archaeologist is equipped with a limited-use pickaxe to chip away at specific crumbling tiles, adding a layer of strategic resource management. With over fifty increasingly complex tombs, the difficulty ramps up sharply, requiring precise timing, spatial awareness, and forward-thinking to avoid dead ends.
