Description

Bio Hazard (also called 生化危机 or “Resident Evil” in Chinese) is a Famicom pirate made by Waixing in 2003 based on Resident Evil for the PlayStation. The plot follows the original game scripts, although just Jill is a playable character and the game is in Chinese.

This game impresses because of the small details. The beginning of the game brings the introduction of Resident Evil 1, originally a video, adapted to sprites. On the title screen, it’s possible to start a new game and load a save game from four available slots for saving.

Similar to most Waixing games, the sounds of the game can get annoying and doesn’t have any tracks from the Resident Evil series. The menu can be accessed by pressing Start and it is perfectly functional. After obtaining the map, a “map” button will become available on the menu.

To save the game, you need to grab the ink ribbon and go to the typewriter. The battle system and sprites seem to be derived from the Resident Evil Gaiden for the Game Boy Color.

Bio Hazard

Overview & History

Released exclusively in Japan in 1990 by Jaleco for the Famicom, Bio Hazard (unrelated to Capcom's later survival horror franchise) is a sci-fi action-platformer featuring a distinct cyberpunk aesthetic. The storyline follows a genetically engineered supersoldier navigating a massive, labyrinthine industrial complex overrun by rogue biomechanical mutations and killer androids. Originally slated for a North American release under the title Cocoron's darker sister-project, it was pulled due to localization shifts, making the original Famicom cartridge a sought-after collector's item for retro enthusiasts today.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Unlike standard linear side-scrollers, Bio Hazard utilizes a non-linear exploration system where players unlock biometric keycards and modular armor upgrades to access previously sealed areas of the sprawling facility. The protagonist possesses a versatile movement set, including a momentum-based slide to duck under toxic gas vents and a magnetic wall-climb to scale vertical shafts. Combat revolves around an interchangeable arm-cannon system; players collect bio-chips dropped by fallen cyborgs to switch firing modes, cycling between a rapid-fire plasma scatter, a heavy armor-piercing laser, and a localized EMP blast that temporarily shorts out nearby security turret logic.
