Metal Force

Overview & History

Released exclusively for the Famicom in Japan by Hot B in 1991, Metal Force is an overlooked sci-fi action-platformer that pushes the 8-bit hardware to its limits. Set in a desolate 22nd-century dystopia, the storyline follows an elite mercenary pilot tasked with infiltrating a subterranean alien-cyborg hive mind that has hijacked Earth's defense grid. Unlike typical run-and-gun titles of its era, Metal Force blends frantic side-scrolling combat with Metroidvania-style exploration, requiring players to backtrack through sprawling industrial corridors and acid-dripping caverns as they unlock progressive hardware upgrades. Its gritty, biomechanical aesthetic and haunting atmospheric soundtrack give it a distinct identity among late-era Famicom cartridges.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Players control the armored protagonist equipped with a versatile multi-directional plasma blaster and a temporary energy shield. Progression relies heavily on acquiring specialized exoskeleton modules hidden deep within sector bosses' lairs, granting abilities like wall-climbing magnet boots and high-velocity dash maneuvers. The character moves with deliberate, weighty momentum, demanding precise platforming over bottomless pits and moving laser grids. Enemies drop power cores that function as currency and health replenishment, but dying resets players to the last checkpoint with base-level gear, heavily punishing careless rushes.

Keyboard Controls
