Description

Super Pang was originally an arcade game released by Mitchell in 1990 in Japan. The game was then ported to the SNES console by Capcom, and released as Super Buster Bros. in 1992. Before that happened, Sachen and Thin Chen Enterprise released this unlicensed port, manufactured and distributed by themselves for the Famicom system in 1991. Unlike the original arcade game and its licensed port, the game does not feature co-op play, as the players simply take turns. Also missing from the original are the different modes of play (Panic mode and Tour mode).

Super Pang

Overview & History

Released initially in arcades by Mitchell Corporation in 1990 and later ported to various home systems including the NES, Super Pang (known as Super Buster Bros. in North America) continues the globetrotting quest of two brothers tasked with ridding the world of bouncing, multiplying spheres. Unlike its predecessor Pang, which featured static single-screen stages, this iteration introduces dynamic world geography spanning locations from Mount Fuji to Antarctica, complete with password features to track progress. The loose narrative sees the intrepid sibling heroes journeying across the globe to pop ever-multiplying bouncing orbs that threaten civilization, blending puzzle-solving strategy with arcade-action reflexes.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

The core gameplay loop centers on destroying bouncing rubber spheres that split into two smaller spheres every time they are struck by a harpoon, down to a microscopic size before disappearing completely. Players must clear all bubbles within a strict time limit while navigating hazardous terrain, ladders, and ropes. Power-ups randomly drop from destroyed blocks or ceiling fixtures, granting special weapons like double harpoons, grappling hooks that anchor to ceilings, and explosive time-stops that freeze all active spheres. Unlike platformers featuring complex combos, Super Pang demands precise spatial awareness and foresight, as letting a single giant orb fragment unchecked can quickly overwhelm the playing field.
