Description

The object of the game is to rescue the five hostages in the concentration camp. The game is divided into six stages: Communication Setup, Jungle, Village, Powder Magazine, Concentration Camp, and Airport. Completion of each stage advances the story. For example, upon completing the Jungle stage, an enemy leader is interrogated and the location of the enemy’s concentration camp is found. This was one of the first shooter games to feature a storyline, and it had some similarities to real special operations missions.

Operation Wolf

Overview & History

Released by Taito for the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1989, Operation Wolf is a legendary home port of the 1987 arcade rail-shooter. While the original cabinet famously featured a molded Uzi submachine gun controller, the NES adaptation ingeniously accommodated both standard gamepads and the NES Zapper light gun. Players step into the heavy combat boots of Special Forces operative Roy Adams, embarking on a perilous solo mission behind enemy lines to rescue five American POWs held captive in a hostile Central American jungle. Unlike typical side-scrollers, the screen auto-scrolls horizontally through six distinct, increasingly frantic stages—ranging from a jungle camp and ammunition dump to a heavily guarded communications relay and the final airport escape.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Survival in Operation Wolf requires aggressive crowd control and meticulous resource management. As Roy automatically advances, waves of knife-wielding thugs, green-beret commandos, enemy Jeeps, attack helicopters, and explosive-toting speedboats rush the screen. You must manage a finite supply of 9mm bullets and deadly grenades. Strategic target prioritization is essential: shooting white-garbed hostages, nurses, and innocent civilians penalizes your vital health meter, whereas shooting pigs, chickens, and various ration crates yields critical health pickups, extra ammunition, and specialized power-ups like unlimited firing speed. A dedicated "Mega-Crush" smart bomb clears all enemies currently on screen, acting as a last resort against overwhelming boss assaults.
