Panic Restaurant

Overview & History

Developed by Escape and published by Taito, Panic Restaurant was released for the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) in 1992 in North America and Japan (known as Wanpaku Kokkun no Gourmet World). The storyline follows Chef Cookie, whose beloved restaurant has been hijacked by his jealous rival, Chef Saitom. Driven mad by envy, Saitom casts a dark spell over the kitchen, transforming everyday cooking utensils, rogue vegetables, and foul fowl into aggressive, mutated monsters. Cookie must grab his trusty frying pan and fight his way through six bizarre, food-themed stages—ranging from the soup appetizer to the dessert-filled rooftop—to reclaim his culinary empire.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Panic Restaurant is a vibrant, fast-paced 2D platformer that distinguishes itself through brilliant surrealist art direction and creative mechanics. Players control Chef Cookie, traversing vertically and horizontally scrolling stages while battling enemies like angry carrots, floating rolling pins, and giant lobsters. Cookie's primary weapon is his heavy frying pan, which he uses in melee combat to bash foes or scoop them up as projectiles. Throughout the levels, Cookie collects gold coins dropped by defeated enemies. These coins act as currency that can be spent at vending machines found in-between stages to purchase health refills, extra lives, and special sub-weapons like ladles, cleavers, and salt shakers that alter his attack range. Each stage culminates in a chaotic boss battle against possessed kitchen appliances or mutated master chefs, requiring precise jumping and strategic pan-swings to survive.
