Rygar

Overview & History

Released by Tecmo in 1987 for the Nintendo Entertainment System, Rygar is a legendary platforming action-adventure that reimagines the original 1986 arcade coin-op. Departing from the arcade's linear, left-to-right progression, the NES port transforms the game into an expansive, open-ended quest reminiscent of Metroid. Players assume the role of the legendary warrior Rygar, resurrected in the crumbling, mythic realm of Argool to overthrow the evil tyrant Ligar. Armed with the "Diskarmor"—a deadly, bladed shield attached to a chain—Rygar must explore labyrinthine zones, acquire mystical power-ups called "Indras," and master the terrain to save the world.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Unlike standard side-scrollers, Rygar introduces non-linear exploration where progress is gated by obtaining specific legendary items. Players traverse vertical and horizontal screens filled with hostile mythological beasts, crumbling platforms, and hidden doors. The core offensive mechanic is the Diskarmor, which can be thrown horizontally to slice enemies from a distance or used in close combat. As players progress through hostile environments like the Valley of Fire and the floating islands of Darama, they collect Star Potion upgrades that permanently extend Rygar's health meter. Defeating bosses yields essential abilities like the Tiger Power (increased attack strength), the Cross (invincibility), and the Wind Pulley (access to new areas), seamlessly blending platforming precision with light role-playing progression.
