Overview & History

Developed by Capcom and released for the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1989, Willow is an action-roleplaying game loosely based on George Lucas's fantasy film of the same name. Unlike the platforming-heavy arcade adaptation, the NES version takes heavy inspiration from top-down adventure classics like The Legend of Zelda, while injecting distinct Capcom platforming segments and leveling mechanics. Players assume the role of Willow Ufgood, a humble Nelwyn farmer destined to protect the infant Elora Danan from the tyrannical Queen Bavmorda. Accompanied by the fierce swordsman Madmartigan in later segments, Willow must traverse diverse overworlds, dense forests, and treacherous dungeons. Although it released during the peak of the 8-bit era, the game carved out a unique identity through its blend of overhead exploration, side-scrolling combat encounters, and an upgrade system that rewards players for defeating monsters and earning experience points.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Gameplay alternates between a top-down perspective for overworld navigation and towns, and side-scrolling action sequences for specific dungeons and boss encounters. As Willow progresses, he collects magical acorns, powerful swords, and protective shields dropped by enemies or found in hidden chests. Defeating foes yields experience points, allowing Willow to level up, which automatically increases his maximum health and magic power. Magic plays a crucial role; Willow can cast spells like destructive fireballs and levitation to bypass obstacles. Navigating the world requires careful inventory management, equipping the right magical talisman, and talking to NPCs for vital progression clues.
