Description

Aladdin (阿拉丁 in Chinese) is a port of the SNES version of the game of the same name, made by Hummer Team in 1995. The game is one of the more well known pirate ports and is commonly found on multicarts (in its MMC3 hacked form).

This game is a port of the SNES Aladdin. It has all the stages from the original and it even has the bonus game (although the genie is missing due to the NES lacking Mode 7). The game lacks Abu following you, guards being able to throw barrels at you and civilians. Also the huge snake is missing at the end when fighting Jafar. The physics are similarly programmed to that of Somari, making some of the later levels more difficult. There’s also a considerable amount of sprite flicker in the genie level

Aladdin (Hummer Team)

Overview & History

Released around 1995 by the infamous unlicensed Taiwanese developer Hummer Team, this pirate port brings Disney's beloved 1992 animated film to the aging Nintendo Entertainment System. Capitalizing on the massive success of Capcom's official SNES title and Virgin Games' Genesis version, Hummer Team cleverly reverse-engineered aspects of those 16-bit heavyweights to fit the 8-bit architecture. Despite running on hardware it was never designed for, this bootleg stands out among unlicensed titles for its surprisingly vibrant graphics, digitized-sounding music tracks that cleverly adapt Zander's original score, and a surprisingly faithful rendition of Agrabah's bustling streets, dungeons, and the Cave of Wonders.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Players control the street-rat-turned-hero Aladdin as he platform hops through side-scrolling stages filled with Royal Guards, greedy merchants, and hostile wildlife. Unlike many cheap pirate games, Hummer Team gave Aladdin a robust set of animations and abilities. Aladdin can run, duck, climb ropes, and execute a standard sword-slash attack using a scimitar. Additionally, he can collect and throw apples at enemies from a distance. The game incorporates classic platforming tropes like bouncing on springs, dodging falling stalactites, and collecting red gems to boost your score. While the hit detection can occasionally be unforgiving and the difficulty curve spikes sharply in later levels—such as the notoriously difficult magic carpet escape stage—the sheer ambition behind bringing a 16-bit aesthetic to the 8-bit Famicom/NES makes it a fascinating artifact of gaming history.
