Description

The game is set on the mean streets of Brooklyn, which you must venture through to meet your girlfriend, and then rescue her from her kidnappers. This is split into five levels, taking you through the subway and the docks as well as some inhospitable streets. A wide range of aggressive moves are on offer, including headbutts, kicks, punches and flying kicks. Much of the game’s violence is depicted in a fairly tongue-in-cheek style, with an element of attempted humour along the way.

Overview & History

Developed by Technōs Japan and published by Taito, Renegade hit the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1988, serving as the localized home port of the arcade hit Nekketsu Kōha Kunio-kun. Unlike the Japanese original, which featured school delinquent Kunio fighting rival gangs to save his friend, the North American NES release swapped the high school aesthetic for a gritty urban vigilante theme. Players step into the boots of Mr. K., a lone-wolf street brawler navigating four distinct, hazard-filled stages—from the subway platform and city docks to a multi-level park and a heavily guarded warehouse. Armed only with his fists, boots, and unwavering grit, Mr. K. must rescue his kidnapped girlfriend, Marian (borrowing characters from the Double Dragon universe), by obliterating waves of street thugs, biker gangs, and boss-tier pimp-daddies.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Unlike traditional side-scrolling beat-'em-ups, Renegade utilizes a fixed-screen, arena-based progression system. Players can move vertically and horizontally across the playfield, engaging enemies in intense, tactical hand-to-hand combat. Mr. K.'s diverse move set includes rapid-fire punches, devastating roundhouse kicks, a backwards drop-kick for enemies sneaking up from behind, and a ground-stomping curb stomp that obliterates downed foes. Players can also grab enemies by the collar to deliver brutal knee strikes or hurl them across the asphalt. Every stage culminates in a tense one-on-one boss battle against foes like the giant brawler Jack or the whip-wielding, Amazonian-like boss Bertha. The isometric perspective and tight collision detection require precise positioning, turning every alley brawl into a strategic dance of evasion and relentless aggression.
