It’s a Dance with Danger when Willy tries to rescue Jill!

The hippest cool Kat in New York, Willy, is hot on the tail of local crime boss, Mugsy. The fur’s gonna fly ’cause Mugsy just cat-nabbed Willy’s girl, Jill, and stashed her away. To find her, Willy has to face hoods on the streets of the Big Apple, duel desperados in the wild west, dog-fight Ace Pilots at 40,000 feet, and avoid being de-railed at an amusement park. But he’s not called the Rockin’ Kat for nothing, and when he starts break dancin’ and body slammin’ his enemies, make room on the dance floor!

Rockin' Kats

Overview & History

Developed by Atlus and originally released for the Nintendo Entertainment System in Japan as Hudson Hawk (though radically redesigned prior to its 1991 North American localization), Rockin' Kats is a wildly inventive yet criminally overlooked platformer. The storyline follows Willy, a hep-cat jazz musician and brilliant inventor living in New York City, whose saxophone is stolen by a ruthless mob of rival dog gangsters known as the "Mugsy Gang." To rescue his kidnapped girlfriend Jill and retrieve his beloved instrument, Willy must blast his way through five distinct, television-themed boroughs—ranging from a skyscraper construction site to a wildly animated western studio—ultimately dismantling the canine syndicate in a brilliant cartoon-styled crusade of jazz-infused vengeance.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Unlike standard NES platformers where characters wield swords or guns, Willy’s primary tool and weapon is the "PUNCH-GUN"—a mechanical boxing glove attached to a heavy-duty spring. This unique implement serves a triple purpose: it delivers devastating melee blows to quirky enemies, hooks onto overhead pegs to hoist Willy across sprawling chasms via a satisfying swinging mechanic, and shoots out as a ranged projectile. Players can even purchase specialized upgrade cartridges at in-game pawnshops using cash collected from defeated foes, adding explosive rockets, homing capabilities, or bouncy rubber balls to the punch-gun's repertoire. The game also features a unique television channel-surfing mechanic between stages, letting players select their next level destination, buy power-ups, or participate in whimsical bonus minigames like a high-stakes gambling wheel or a shooting gallery to earn extra lives and cash.
