Side Pocket

Overview & History

Developed by Data East and originally released in arcades before making its way to the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1987 (with a North American release in 1990 by Capcom), Side Pocket is a stylish, isometric pool simulation. While it features no traditional storyline or narrative campaign, the game captures the gritty, neon-lit atmosphere of a smoke-filled 1980s urban pool hall. Instead of saving a princess or fighting aliens, your sole mission is to hustle your way up the ranks by clearing increasingly difficult pocket-billiard puzzles, impressing club managers with trick shots, and conquering both solo score attacks and two-player head-to-head matches.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Unlike standard 9-ball or 8-ball simulators, Side Pocket focuses heavily on arcade progression and precision. Players must clear all numbered balls from the table within a strict limit of allotted shots, earning extra lives and bonus points for consecutive sinks and stylish scratches. The game introduces a unique 'Pocket' meter mechanic: sinking balls in designated flashing pockets awards massive score multipliers. As you advance through stages set in glamorous cities like Chicago and Las Vegas, the table layouts become diabolical, requiring master-level understanding of bank shots, English (spin), and power control. You can adjust the cue ball's impact point using an intuitive reticle, fine-tune your aiming angle down to the decimal, and even execute dramatic jump shots to clear obstacles. Failing to clear the table before running out of turns results in a game over, forcing you to feed more digital quarters into the virtual machine.

Keyboard Controls

  • Arrow Keys / D-Pad: Adjust cue angle, position cursor, and select menu options
  • Action Keys: Hold A to pull back the cue stick for power; press B to toggle English/spin and fine-tune the cue ball hit point
  • Enter: Start / Pause
