Description

Hop on your souped-up board and cruise into the wildest multi-event contest ever dreamed of by man or beast. Three of these twisted trials are cut from the concrete courses of pro competitions. Each pits you head to head with a friend, shooting ramps or racing downhill, while going for rock n’ rolls, hand plants, aerials, rail slides and methods! Then blast into “Mad Max on Wheels”, dueling to the death with Bionic Lester, the dirtiest dude in the jam and joust. And finally “Skate and Destroy”, a challenge that’ll turn you into a Samurai skater, karate chopping your way through a tough alley filled with thugs, trash and unmentionable traffic hazards. So squirt a little oil onto your ball bearings, and prepare to Skate or Die!

Skate or Die

Overview & History

Released by Electronic Arts in 1988 and ported to the Nintendo Entertainment System by Konami in 1990, Skate or Die captures the chaotic, neon-drenched subculture of late-80s skateboarding. Unlike standard sports titles, the game eschews a linear storyline, instead dropping players into the suburban turf war of fictional punks Rodney and Bionic, overseen by shopkeeper Lester. Players choose between three aspiring skaters—CJ, Poseidon, and Bif—each tackling diverse asphalt disciplines. Konami's NES port transformed the original PC computer game into a vibrant, multi-event extreme sports showcase, featuring iconic chiptune punk tracks and split-screen multiplayer modes that cemented its status as a quintessential couch-competition classic.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

The game is divided into five distinct events split between ramp acrobatics and brutal downhill racing. In the Freestyle Ramp and High Jump, timing is everything: players must stroke the D-pad rhythmically to pump up and down the halfpipe, executing 360-degree aerials, kickflips, and handplants before nailing the landing. Miss your angle, and your skater eats concrete with a comical, crunching sound effect. The downhill action shifts gears entirely into adrenaline-fueled survival. In Downhill Race and Downhill Jam, players dodge parked cars, rogue pedestrians, puddles, and aggressive rival skaters wielding clubs. The ultimate test of playground dominance is the Pool Joust, a gladiator-style match inside an empty swimming pool where opponents shove each other off boards using giant foam jousting poles, testing balance and reaction times.
