Description

The game takes place in the mansion of the Edison family: Dr. Fred, Nurse Edna, and their son Weird Ed. Living with the Edisons are two large, disembodied tentacles – one purple and the other green. The player starts out by selecting two of six characters to accompany protagonist Dave Miller. The intro sequence shows that a meteor crashed near the mansion 20 years earlier. The sentient meteor took control of the family and caused Dr. Fred to begin conducting human experiments while plotting to take over the world. After the introduction, Dave and his two companions prepare to enter the mansion to rescue his cheerleader girlfriend, Sandy Pantz, whom Dr. Fred has kidnapped.

Released by Jaleco in 1990, the US NES port of Lucasfilm Games' *Maniac Mansion* brought Ron Gilbert and Gary Winnick’s point-and-click masterpiece to Nintendo hardware. Originally a breakthrough on home computers, adapting the game for an 8-bit console required stripping away the mouse cursor and replacing it with a custom UI. The storyline follows teenager Dave Miller as he sneaks into the eccentric mansion of Dr. Fred Edison, whose mind has been hijacked by a glowing, sentient Meteor that fell from space. Dave must rescue his kidnapped cheerleader girlfriend, Sandy. Because Nintendo of America enforced strict censorship guidelines at the time, this US version was subjected to numerous alterations, including the removal of edgier dialogue, the microwaveable hamster sequence being heavily toned down, and censored artwork, making it a unique artifact of early 90s localization.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Unlike standard NES platformers, *Maniac Mansion* is a pure graphic adventure driven by logic puzzles and exploration. Before starting, players select Dave and two teenage companions from a roster of six, each possessing unique skills like lockpicking, photography, or electrical repair that open distinct puzzle solutions. The bottom half of the screen features a pioneering "SCUMM-lite" command grid containing fifteen action verbs (such as "Walk to," "Pick up," "Use," "Push," and "Unlock"). Players must direct their chosen kids through the sprawling, trap-laden estate, picking up seemingly random items—like a loose rug, a battery, and a cassette tape—and combining them to bypass obstacles. With multiple playable characters, branching paths, and various possible endings (including accidental nuclear self-destruction), the game offers high replayability.
