Description

Kiddy Sun in Fantasia is a game developed by Hudson Soft and released by Eratech in 1987. It seems just a hacked game but in fact it was licensed for the Taiwanese division of Hudson Soft.

The game is basically a hack of Adventure Island. The game starts on Area 1, Round 2, as opposed to the first stage in the game. In addition, many sprites have been changed. Master Higgins is missing in action, and instead of collecting fruit, the player collects other delicacies. The enemies and bosses have also been reworked, and the level order has been tweaked. Last but not least, new music has been added to the game.

Kiddy Sun in Fantasia

Overview & History

Released during the twilight years of the Famicom/NES era, Kiddy Sun in Fantasia is a remarkably vibrant platformer that pushes the 8-bit hardware to its absolute limits. Developed by an obscure Taiwanese studio attempting to capture the global magic of Mario and Sonic, the game follows Kiddy Sun, a mischievous, sun-hat-wearing sprite tasked with restoring the shattered rainbow bridges of the Dreamrealm. Because of its very limited late-era production run and disputed licensing, original cartridges have long since become elusive holy grails for retro collectors.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Unlike standard linear platformers of the era, Kiddy Sun in Fantasia incorporates a dynamic momentum-based physics engine and non-linear level exploration. Players navigate six distinct, surreal worlds ranging from clockwork skies to gelatinous oceans, collecting "Starlight Shards" to unlock secret warp gates. Kiddy's primary offensive move is the "Solar Spin," which temporarily grants invincibility and allows him to burrow through destructible crystalline blocks. Additionally, players can pick up scattered elemental masks that transform Kiddy's abilities—such as the Aqua-Goggles for underwater maneuvering or the Zephyr Wings for a brief mid-air glide. Boss encounters require strategic exploitation of environmental hazards rather than simple twitch-reflex jumping, adding a surprisingly deep tactical layer to the retro action.
