Is nothing sacred? RollerGames, the 21st Century’s most popular thrill sport, is the latest victim of V.I.P.E.R. (Vicious International Punks and Eternal Renegades). With their greedy eyes on RollerGames’ mega prize money, they’ve corrupted three teams and kidnapped Emerson “Skeeter” Bankhead, the games’ beloved commissioner.

You and your own three teams of righteous skate kings must stop V.I.P.E.R.’s criminal venom from infecting the entire city. So you’ve got to take the fight to the streets. And the sewers, and the junkyards, and the highways and the jungles . . . through six stages of dastardly traps of doom as you leap over open manholes, careening oil drums and treacherous land-slides. Race around oil slicks and man-eating canines. And avoid ambush by combat copters, bomb-wielding goons and creeps like Captain Meat Hook and the Fish Face. But time is against you. And so are V.I.P.E.R.’s judo masters, skateboard thugs, motorcycle madmen and other assorted sinister scum.

If your multi-faceted fists can’t punch you through, you’ll need your special assault body blocks, jump kicks and double whammy slams.
It’s a bone-crunching skate-athon for your life, Skeeter’s life, and for the good of RollerGames. So vanquish V.I.P.E.R. before they melt your ball bearings into bullets.

Overview & History

Released by Konami in 1990 for the Nintendo Entertainment System, Rollergames is a unique side-scrolling action title based on the short-lived, high-octane live-action television show of the same name. Unlike traditional beat-'em-ups of the era, the game merges vehicular roller-derby racing with classic platforming combat. Players choose from three distinct characters—Jack, Suzie, or Hack—each armed with unique attributes to defeat the menacing syndicate known as the Council, who have plunged the futuristic dystopian society into chaos. Konami’s signature arcade pedigree shines through vibrant character sprites, an infectious chiptune soundtrack by Kouji Murata, and frantic pacing that pushes the 8-bit hardware to its limits.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

The game is split into two distinct gameplay styles. The primary stages require players to navigate perilous urban environments on foot, utilizing signature character attacks. Jack wields a heavy wrench for sweeping melee strikes, Suzie relies on swift acrobatics and a boomerang, while Hack utilizes rapid-fire punches. Along the way, players collect power-ups to upgrade their offensive range and clear out waves of punk thugs and killer robots. Interrupting these platforming levels are high-speed, vertically scrolling roller-derby stages. In these segments, your character is locked in perpetual motion on roller skates, requiring precise lane-switching, jumping over environmental obstacles, and ducking under fiery barriers while punching rival skaters and avoiding hazards. Boss encounters at the end of each zone require pattern recognition and precise timing, blending the frantic racing mechanics with intense combat challenges.
