Description

Developed from the popular cartoon series, Spy vs. Spy is Mad Magazine’s first official computer game! Real-time animation, superb graphics, competitive game play and mad-cap action, make this a favorite for players of all ages.

As a player, your mission is to penetrate the foreign embassy, obtain the top secret briefcase and leave in time to catch your private “get-a-way” plane. Players control their spy’s every action as the zany agents in black and white search for the items needed to complete the mission. To escape, each spy must acquire a passport, secret plans, keys and money. The search gets more exciting as the number of booby-traps are increased. But remember where you put them. Booby traps can backfire – so be careful you don’t get caught in your own trap! The zany antics of these well known spys are guaranteed to keep players howling!

Spy vs Spy

Overview & History

Developed by First Star Software and ported to the Nintendo Entertainment System by Kemco in 1986, Spy vs Spy translates Antonio Prohias's iconic MAD Magazine Cold War comic strip into a frantic, dual-screen strategic trap-em-up. Players choose between the white-clad or black-clad espionage agents racing against a ticking clock inside a heavily secured embassy. The objective is to scavenge four specific embassy items—a passport, secret documents, embassy plans, and getaway money—pack them into a briefcase, and escape via the airport before your rival does or time expires.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

The screen is vertically split into two simultaneous player perspectives, creating intense psychological warfare and local multiplayer paranoia. Navigating the maze-like office rooms, hallways, and elevators requires picking up and placing devious traps like spring-loaded bombs, hanging bucket droppers, ticking time bombs, and floor-wire triggers. Combat happens in real-time melee when agents cross paths, resulting in comical slapstick animations where the loser is temporarily incapacitated, drops their inventory, and respawns. Managing your inventory capacity is crucial, and you can even sabotage your opponent's items or steal their loot right out of their hands before they reach the exit.
