You’ll need these abilities as you make your difficult journey through many dangerous places. Carefully hop your way to the top of an active volcano. Surf down a surging river. Lizard

Overview & History

Released in 2017 by Brad Smith (Paper Planet) after a remarkably successful Kickstarter campaign, Lizard is a love letter to the late-era Nintendo Entertainment System hardware. Written entirely in assembly language and mapped to an authentic MMC1 mapper configuration, this atmospheric puzzle-platformer rejects standard tropes by casting the player as a succession of cold-blooded reptiles navigating a cavernous, desolate, and strangely melancholic underground world. Eschewing traditional combat, the game relies on exploration, environmental physics, and the unique biological quirks of its titular protagonist to uncover a cryptic, wordless narrative told strictly through haunting chip-tune ambiance and striking monochromatic-leaning color palettes.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Unlike standard platformers where your character grows stronger, Lizard centers its core mechanic around finding, discarding, and morphing into different skins and species of reptiles. Each lizard form boasts distinct physiological traits essential for navigation: some can squeeze through narrow fissures, others endure extreme hazards, and certain forms can emit frequency-specific vocalizations to manipulate the environment or interact with enigmatic subterranean fauna. The game world is a vast, non-linear interconnected labyrinth featuring no text, tutorial screens, or explicit objectives. Survival demands keen observation, deciphering acoustic puzzles, and managing health, which diminishes rapidly upon contact with water or hostile creatures. Players must frequently backtrack, utilizing newly acquired reptilian abilities to unlock previously impassable subterranean corridors.
