Description

Think you can handle a real Martial Arts challenge? Then how about guiding Daniel-San through the series of hazards, obstacles, and challenges that stand in his path? But don’t think that just being able to fight will get you through. This time it’s not enough to just punch, kick and jump… this time your total martial arts training will be put to the test. Your discipline and inner control could be what saves your life. You must prove that you are capable of thinking, reasoning, and reacting. Catching a fly with your chopsticks or splitting blocks of ice with your bare hand is just as important as fighting face to face with your enemy. This challenge will take you to the streets of L.A., the back roads of Okinawa and many strange areas beyond. Always keep your mind clear and remember all that you’ve been taught, and maybe… just maybe… you’ll make it!

The Karate Kid

Overview & History

Released by LJN in November 1987, The Karate Kid adapts the classic film narrative, taking players on a martial arts journey from the All-Valley Karate Championship through the events of Okinawa. Unlike typical side-scrollers of the era, this licensed NES title uniquely blends linear platforming stages with first-person bonus mini-games. LJN's adaptation stands out for faithfully incorporating iconic moments, such as catching flies with chopsticks and breaking blocks of ice, while charting a remarkably steep difficulty curve that tests the patience of even seasoned retro gamers.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

The game is divided into alternating platforming levels and interactive bonus stages. Players control Daniel LaRusso as he traverses suburban streets, forests, and Okinawan ruins, fending off waves of Cobra Kai thugs and local adversaries using a mix of punches, high kicks, and low sweeps. Between levels, players test their timing and reflexes in mini-games to earn points and crucial "Drum Punch" or "Crane Kick" power-ups. These special moves are essential for boss fights against opponents like Johnny Lawrence and Chozen, though misusing them depletes Daniel's limited Chi meter. Health is meticulously tracked, and a single mistimed jump over a chasm or pit can cost a life, emphasizing precision platforming alongside beat-'em-up combat.
