Description

The evil wizard Belzed and his forces have attacked the kingdom of Lowrel, killed its king and queen and kidnapped princess Silphee. Players take control of aspiring martial artist Thonolan who sets out to rescue Silphee and defeat Belzed.

Kick Master is a side-scrolling platformer in which enemies are defeated by using various kicks and spells. Defeated enemies drop three items that refill Thoalon’s health or magic, grant an extra life, damage him or increase his experience. When Thoalan gains a level, his maximum MP is increased and he learns new kicks, such as sliding, flying, roundhouse or butterfly kicks. Along the way, he can also pick up different spells that damage his enemies, protect him or refill his health.

KickMaster

Overview & History

Developed by KID and published by Taito in North America, *KickMaster* arrived on the Nintendo Entertainment System late in its lifecycle in 1992. This dark fantasy side-scroller ditches traditional sword-and-sorcery tropes for a purely martial arts-focused approach. Players step into the armored boots of Thon, a young knight whose kingdom of Solaria has been brutally overthrown by the evil wizard Wizpak. With his brother Mac kidnapped and their master slain, Thon must rely solely on his legendary kicking prowess to hack his way through hordes of goblins, skeletons, and armored knights to rescue the royal princess and avenge his mentor.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Unlike standard NES action platformers where weapons dominate, *KickMaster* centers its entire combat engine around dynamic kicks. Thon begins his quest with basic strikes, but as he defeats enemies and accumulates experience points, his level increases—boosting his maximum health and unlocking devastating new martial arts techniques. Players can execute slide kicks, aerial diving kicks, backflips, and even elemental strikes like the lightning kick. The game also features a robust magic system utilizing "Spell Points" gathered from fallen foes, allowing Thon to cast offensive fireballs or defensive shields. The atmospheric medieval soundtrack, composed by Hiroshi Nakagoe, perfectly complements the challenging, gritty level design spanning dungeons, towers, and treacherous forests.
