Abadox: The Deadly Inner War

Overview & History

Released by Natsume for the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1989 in Japan and 1990 in North America, Abadox: The Deadly Inner War stands out as one of the most uniquely macabre sci-fi shoot-'em-ups of the 8-bit era. Set in the 25th century, the game drops players into a terrifying biological nightmare: the parasitic alien entity known as Parasitis has swallowed the planet Abadox whole, along with Princess Maria. You control Second Lieutenant Nazal, who must pilot his fighter craft directly down the massive alien's throat, navigating its twisting, fleshy esophagus, organs, and skeletal remains to rescue the princess and annihilate the beast from the inside out. This grotesque, H.R. Giger-esque bio-horror aesthetic pushed the limits of the NES hardware with undulating background textures and pulsing organic walls.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Abadox uniquely alternates between two entirely different gameplay perspectives across its six grueling stages. Even-numbered stages throw players into traditional side-scrolling horizontal shoot-'em-up action, while odd-numbered stages shift the perspective to a vertical, top-down crawling shooter. Nazal's suit and ship can be upgraded by collecting power chips dropped by defeated biomechanical enemies. These upgrades allow players to increase their speed, deploy trailing option modules, and swap out the default weapon for devastating spread shots, lasers, or homing missiles. However, the game is infamous for its punishing difficulty: much like Gradius, death resets your power-ups, and checkpoints can send you drastically backward. Navigating tight corridor walls and avoiding instant-death crushing obstacles requires absolute precision.
