Overview & History

Released by Hudson Soft in 1992 for the Nintendo Entertainment System, Adventure Island 3 (known in Japan as Takahashi Meijin no Daibōken Jima III) represents the refined apex of Master Higgins' 8-bit platforming escapades. Following the commercial success of its predecessors, this installment ditched the rigid inventory system of the second game in favor of a streamlined weapon and dinosaur selection wheel. The storyline picks up when aliens abduct Master Higgins' girlfriend, Tina, forcing our iconic baseball-capped hero to traverse distinct island worlds filled with prehistoric beasts and extraterrestrial foes to rescue her.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

The core gameplay loop retains the relentless pace of the series, heavily reliant on Higgins' continuously depleting vitality meter, which forces players to constantly collect fruit to survive. Higgins begins armed only with his trusty stone axe, but he can discover hammers, boomerangs, and a powerful fireball shooter. A defining feature of Adventure Island 3 is the expanded stable of rideable dinosaur companions. Players can mount the Red Camptosaurus (shoots fireballs), the Blue Camptosaurus (navigates ice safely), the Pteranodon (grants flight), the Elasmosaurus (dominates underwater stages), and the newly introduced Triceratops, whose tail whip clears out tight groups of enemies.
