Play solo or join forces with your friends. This game supports up to 4 players. Will you help each other overcome the dangerous traps built to stop nosy adventurers or will you turn on your comrades to snatch the high score? No downtime: If you die while at least one other player is still alive, you will turn into a ghost and can help by freezing enemies. Try to open crates and treasure chests to find a Fairy or Feather that will bring you back to life.

Developed by the indie studio Morphcat Games and originally crowdfunded via Kickstarter, Micro Mages is a remarkable modern homebrew title released physically on an authentic NES cartridge in 2019. Despite modern development tools, the game is meticulously coded to fit within a mere 40-kilobit (or 8-kilobyte) ROM constraint—emulating the exact technical limitations of early 8-bit classics. The tongue-in-cheek storyline follows four mighty sorcerers who accidentally shrink themselves to microscopic proportions while studying an ancient spellbook. Now trapped inside their own magical tower, they must ascend through vertically scrolling deathtraps filled with hostile insects, slime, and furious bosses to reclaim their rightful size.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Micro Mages is a precision platformer designed with a frantic, auto-scrolling vertical screen that relentlessly pushes players upward. Unlike traditional platformers, hesitation means instant crushing death at the bottom of the screen. Players can choose between four wizard characters, though the core gameplay revolves around a brilliant cooperative or competitive 4-player simultaneous multiplayer mode. The characters possess a unique arsenal centered on a magical trident. Instead of merely jumping on enemies, wizards can shoot magic projectiles to stun foes, and then pounce on those stunned enemies to gain an extra-high bounce. Furthermore, the trident can be used to deflect enemy projectiles, stick into vertical walls for temporary ledges, or piggyback ride on top of other players to reach otherwise impossible heights. Hidden treasure chests, secret passages, and shop upgrades are scattered throughout the tower, adding layers of strategy to the relentless vertical ascent.
