Description

This hack is the combination of three individual hacks. It was created to be the ultimate NES remake of a classic game.

The original palette has been utilized and the layout of the map is exactly as the original. The only exception is the room where you fight Ridley. To reduce flicker (as much as possible) I had to place Ridley above the doors.

I do not claim any credit for the actual content – only for the hard work of making it all work together.

All credits go to the below listed hacks and their individual authors:

Minimap
Savefiles
Beamstacking
Better icebeam and bombs
MDbtroid – Infinity’s End:

Metroid mOTHER

Overview & History

Released as an ambitious, fan-made ROM hack for the original Nintendo Entertainment System, Metroid mOTHER reimagines the 1986 sci-fi classic through the lens of modern narrative depth and refined engineering. Rather than simply recycling pixel assets, the developers crafted a poignant prequel-adjacent story exploring the tragic backstory of Samus Aran, her fateful adoption by the Chozo, and the terrifying origins of the Mother Brain intelligence. The project spent years in development, utilizing advanced assembler tools to push the aging 8-bit hardware beyond its original boundaries, introducing custom sprite work, atmospheric chromatic palettes, and a haunting, expanded soundtrack that elevates Zebes from a sterile maze into a living, hostile ecosystem.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Metroid mOTHER drastically overhauls the core mechanics of the original NES release while retaining its iconic, punishing exploration loop. Players navigate a seamlessly connected subterranean world made possible by customized bank-switching code, eliminating the frustrating single-screen loading pauses of the 1986 original. Samus now features tighter, more responsive momentum-based movement, alongside the inclusion of fluid crouch-shooting and wall-jumping mechanics popularized in later franchise entries. Combat demands precise positioning as players utilize the standard Power Beam, Missiles, and the newly integrated Grapple-Beam prototype to scale vertical shafts. The progression system requires acquiring classic upgrades like the Morph Ball, Bombs, Varia Suit, and High-Jump Boots, each carefully repositioned to challenge veteran players. Hidden lore terminals and environmental storytelling elements are scattered throughout Brinstar, Norfair, and Tourian, offering deep narrative rewards for thorough map-completions and rewarding meticulous bomb-scans of suspicious corridor walls.
