Nebs ‘n Debs is a new game for the original Nintendo Entertainment System. Run, jump and dash your way through 12 levels as you search for the missing parts of Debs’ ship to escape the hostile alien planet Vespasian 7MV! Along the way you’ll discover powerups left behind by an ancient alien civilization and gather crystals to feed the strange being fused to your head. If you don’t gather enough… you’ll both perish.

Overview & History

Developed by Dullahan Software, Nebs 'n Debs is a vibrant, contemporary homebrew title released for the Nintendo Entertainment System in 2019, later receiving a physical cartridge release via Infinite NES Lives. The game follows the sci-fi escapades of Debs, a plucky space explorer, and her shape-shifting alien companion Nebs, who takes the form of a gelatinous block. After their spaceship suffers a catastrophic navigational failure across the galaxy, the duo crash-lands on an uncharted, hazard-laden alien planet. To repair their vessel and escape, Debs must brave multi-screen platforming gauntlets while utilizing Nebs’ unique molecular properties to manipulate the environment.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Unlike standard NES side-scrollers, Nebs 'n Debs introduces an innovative buddy mechanic built around spatial puzzles. Debs can throw, catch, and summon Nebs at will. When thrown, Nebs transforms into a solid platform that Debs can stand on, jump off, or use to block deadly laser turrets and crushing pistons. The game unfolds across tightly designed, single-screen rooms reminiscent of arcade classics like Bubble Bobble or Donkey Kong Jr., but with modern checkpointing and fluid momentum. Players must collect scattered ship parts while dodging patrolling cyborg enemies, spikes, and bottomless pits. The game also features a password save system, a time-attack speedrun mode, and branching paths that lead to multiple endings depending on how many secrets Debs uncovers.
