Description

You palm sweats as you grip your Zapper light gun. The Outlaw’s eyes flash. He yells “Fire!” And suddenly you’re in the middle of a Wild West shootout! Get the Outlaw before he gets you, and you’ll win a reward! But watch out – the more you win the tougher it becomes, because this gunman has some very nasty friends. You can take on one outlaw, two outlaws – or the whole wild gang. And you up to the action? Because it’s fast and furious in this quick -on- the-trigger Nintendo Light Gun game!

Wild Gunman

Overview & History

Originally born in arcades as a 1984 electro-mechanical cabinet utilizing 16mm film projection before transitioning to a Zapper-compatible light gun classic for the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1985, Wild Gunman puts players in the boots of a rugged Old West gunslinger. Designed by Gunpei Yokoi, the game achieved pop-culture immortality not just for its quick-draw mechanics, but for its legendary cameo in Back to the Future Part II, where Elijah Wood famously declares "You have to use your hands? That's like a baby's toy!" before Marty McFly effortlessly schools him.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

The game presents three distinct modes: A saloon-style duel against AI bandits, a gang shootout, and a bonus target-practice round. In the primary duel mode, your opponent paces across the screen while a tense, ominous countdown plays. Suddenly, the bandit's eyes flash and a digitized voice barks "FIRE!" The exact reaction time between the audio-visual cue and your trigger pull determines whether you blast your foe into the dirt or get buried yourself. Bandits range in difficulty from slow-draw novices to lightning-fast sharpshooters who actively try to psych you out. Miss your timing, and you'll watch your cowboy clutch his stomach, spin, and tumble face-first into the dusty saloon floor in classic 8-bit fashion.
