Description

The extra-terrestrials in this game are anything but friendly. They’re slimy monsters that are holding space colonists captive aboard seven alien starships.

For one or two players, this super action game challenges you to free the helpless hostages. Search each ship’s deadly levels, using flamethrowers and laser cannons to vaporize alien scum. Look for maps to help you find your way.

After you’ve saved all the captives from one ship, you must destroy its powerful leader before you can move on to the next ship. Remember, to the aliens, you’re slime. And they want you good… and dead!

Alien Syndrome

Overview & History

Originally a 1987 Sega arcade hit, Alien Syndrome was ported to the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1988 by Tengen. This sci-fi action game abandons typical linear progression for a claustrophobic, labyrinthine rescue mission. Players step into the space-boots of Ricky and Mary, two elite space troopers who answer a distress signal from a starbase overrun by biomechanical horrors. As you navigate the winding corridors, the game builds relentless tension through its visceral, Cronenberg-inspired creature designs and flashing red alert aesthetics.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Unlike standard run-and-gun shooters, Alien Syndrome requires a strategic rescue-and-escape loop. Each stage is a top-down maze divided into two distinct phases. First, you must explore every dead-end room to rescue trapped crewmates who provide vital weapon upgrades, such as the powerful flamethrower, fireball, and laser. Once a quota of hostages is saved, the exit door unlocks, leading directly to a chaotic, multi-tiered boss battle against grotesque alien queens. You must manage your time carefully, as an on-screen timer constantly ticks down toward total station self-destruction. The NES port introduces unique password systems and simultaneous two-player cooperative support, allowing both Ricky and Mary to blast xenomorphs side-by-side.
