Description

Final Fantasy ++ (or Final Fantasy Double-Plus, or Final Fantasy Plus Plus) is a “re-imagining” of the very first Final Fantasy game.

What’s been changed:
Redone graphics. (Mostly ripped from later games in the series.)
Redone enemies. (Many are new; some are returning enemies with new properties.)
Redone magic spells. (Magic is now divided into White, Black, and Time Magic.)
Redone weapons and armor. (Some armors now increase evasion rather than lowering it!)
Redone maps. (Most are similar to the original game’s; some are totally new.)
Redone character class system. (See Read Me.txt for details.)
Two new pieces of music. (Adapted from Final Fantasy 4.)
Some other relatively minor stuff.

Final Fantasy ++

Overview & History

Released as an unauthorized yet remarkably ambitious underground revision for the Nintendo Entertainment System, Final Fantasy ++ pushes the 8-bit hardware far beyond its original boundaries. Building directly upon the source code of the 1987 genre-defining classic, this fan-made iteration reinterprets the pilgrimage of the Warriors of Light. The narrative follows four young heroes branded with mysterious crystals who must venture through time-warped dungeons, overthrow the corrupted knight Garland, and ultimately defeat the fiend Chaos. Unlike the standard release, Final Fantasy ++ integrates a darker, more expansive storyline featuring revised localization, hidden lore tablets scattered across the overworld, and entirely new character sprite animations that capture micro-expressions during critical narrative cutscenes.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Departing from traditional turn-based encounters, Final Fantasy ++ introduces a hybrid active-time combat system tailored for the NES. Players traverse a sprawling 2D overworld map, encountering enemies through both random wilderness triggers and visible map sprites. The party composition remains customizable, allowing players to select from traditional archetypes like the Black Mage, White Mage, Thief, and Fighter, each enhanced with revamped movesets. The Fighter can now execute a "Shield Bash" to stun enemies, while the Thief utilizes a swift "Backstab" ability for critical damage. Magic mechanics have also been overhauled; instead of a rigid charges system, characters draw upon a unified Mana Pool that regenerates slowly during battles. Dungeons feature intricate environmental puzzles, sliding block challenges, and destructible walls requiring specific items like the Mythril Pickaxe to progress.
