Description

This NES version of Baseball Stars is the very first game in SNK’s popular series. It is also the most comprehensive game in the series. You can create, name, upgrade, and manage your own team, as well as customize the team’s logo and colors. You can also change the stats of each individual player by paying him or her more money (earned from winning games).

There are eight already-created gimmick teams that you can also play with, including the American Dreams, Lovely Ladies, and the Ghastly Monsters. You can set up a custom league which will keep complete stats on all players in the league. All games are played in the famous SNK Stadium.

Baseball Stars

Overview & History

Released by SNK in 1989 for the Nintendo Entertainment System, Baseball Stars revolutionized console sports gaming by introducing a revolutionary save feature powered by a battery backup or a lengthy 18-character password system. Unlike its linear predecessors, this title bypasses any traditional storyline, instead immersing players in a sandbox franchise mode where they act as both manager and player. You can build a custom ballclub from the ground up—designing team logos, naming players, and hiring or firing athletes. SNK also included the charmingly arrogant default teams like the "Lovely Ladies" and the powerhouse "American Dreams," establishing a template for deep customization that would heavily influence future sports simulations.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Beneath its cheerful, super-deformed pixel art style lies a surprisingly robust simulation. Players can upgrade their team's batting power, running speed, and pitcher stamina using cash earned through winning matches and drawing stadium attendance. A unique RPG-like element allows athletes to level up incrementally. During actual gameplay, pitching utilizes a grid-based timing system where pitchers can unleash blazing fastballs, deceptive curveballs, and sinking splitters. Batters must read the pitch trajectory and time their swings precisely, using the D-pad to influence hitting direction. Fielding relies on responsive hotkey passing, allowing you to gun down sliding runners at home plate with tense, split-second throws.

Keyboard Controls

  • Arrow Keys / D-Pad: Move player / Aim pitch and batting cursor
